Cannot find control with path in Angular

This error happens when you are working on an Angular Reactive Forms.

If Angular cannot locate a FormControl, FormGroup, or FormArray in your form structure, then this error will happen.

Example Error Message

ERROR Error: Cannot find control with path: ‘name’

Explanation: Angular is trying to access the name, but the form structure does not match.

Why This Error Happens

There are many causes.

1. FormControl Not Defined in FormGroup

❌ Problem

email form control does not exist in the userForm, and you are trying to access it in an HTML file.

HTML

<form [formGroup]="userForm">
  <input formControlName="email">
</form>

TypeScript:

this.userForm = this.fb.group({
  name: ['']
});

✅ Solution

You have to add an email into userForm

this.userForm = this.fb.group({
  name: [''],
  email: ['']
});

2. Nested FormGroup Structure Mismatch

❌ Problem

HTML:

<div formGroupName="state">
  <input formControlName="city">
</div>

TypeScript:

this.userForm = this.fb.group({
  city: ['']
});

But your form does not contain state.

✅ Solution

this.userForm = this.fb.group({
  state: this.fb.group({
    city: ['']
  })
});

3. Accessing Form Before Initialization

Suppose a form is created based on an API response.

✅ You can use setTimeout, but it’s a temporary fix, and I can’t recommend you to use in every situation.

ngOnInit() {
  this.apiService.getUser().subscribe(res => {
    setTimeout(() => {
      this.createUserForm(res);
    });
  });
}

Best Solution

You can use *ngIf to Prevent Early Rendering.

<form *ngIf="userForm" [formGroup]="userForm">
